Pystyttämisestä is a Finnish term that translates to "erection" in English. It refers to the physiological process in which a penis becomes firm, enlarged, and rigid. This occurs due to increased blood flow into the erectile tissues of the penis, specifically the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.

The process of erection is complex and involves a combination of psychological and physical stimuli. Psychological stimuli can include sexual thoughts or fantasies, while physical stimuli often involve direct contact with the genitals. When these stimuli are present, the nervous system sends signals that cause the relaxation of smooth muscles in the penile arteries. This relaxation allows more blood to flow into the erectile tissues. Simultaneously, the veins that normally drain blood away from the penis become compressed, trapping the blood within the corpora cavernosa and leading to engorgement and rigidity.

Erections can occur for various reasons, including sexual arousal, but also spontaneously during sleep (nocturnal penile tumescence) or as a reflex response to bladder fullness. The ability to achieve and maintain an erection is crucial for sexual intercourse. Dysfunctions in this process, such as erectile dysfunction (ED), can have various underlying causes, including physical health conditions, psychological factors, or medication side effects.
