Pyrrh is a rarely used term that appears primarily as a morpheme in Greek-derived vocabulary rather than as a standalone concept in English reference works. When encountered, it is typically treated as a root related to color, especially red or flame-like, tracing back to the Greek word pyrrhos.

Etymology leads back to Greek pyrrhos, meaning red or fiery. The form pyrrh- is seen in the construction of several classical and later terms that reflect color or nomenclature rather than functioning as an independent lexical item.

In linguistic and onomastic contexts, pyrrh- appears most clearly in relation to historical figures and derived adjectives. The name Pyrrhus, from which the common term Pyrrhic is derived, is the best-known example illustrating how a personal name gives rise to color-associated descriptors and metaphorical uses in later language. Pyrrhic remains a distinct, well-attested term separate from the root morpheme, but it demonstrates the way pyrrh- can enter English through proper names.

In mineralogy, the root’s color association is also reflected in terms such as pyrrhotite, named for its reddish-bronze appearance. While pyrrh- itself is not a formal mineral or scientific category, its link to color has influenced the naming of some color-related terms and descriptors in related fields.
