Within the pycnidium, specialized cells called conidiophores give rise to these spores. Pycnospores can vary in shape, size, and color depending on the fungal species, but their defining feature is their compact nature.

These spores are crucial for the asexual reproduction and spread of the fungi that produce them. When conditions are favorable, pycnospores are released from the pycnidia, often aided by rain splash or wind. Upon landing on a suitable substrate, they can germinate and initiate new fungal growth, contributing to the colonization of new environments. Pycnospore production is a common phenomenon in many plant pathogenic fungi, playing a significant role in disease cycles.
