Pwyll is a legendary prince of Dyfed in Welsh mythology, central to the First Branch of the Mabinogi, one of the four branches that make up the Mabinogion. The given name Pwyll derives from Welsh pwyll, meaning discretion, sense, or good judgment; the word also survives as a common Welsh term and personal name.

In the tale, Pwyll encounters Arawn, king of Annwn (the Otherworld), and they form a deep bond after Pwyll helps Arawn by defeating Hafgan, Arawn’s foe, in single combat. They vow friendship and agree to exchange places for a year and a day, with mutual rule. When the period ends they resume their own lives, having forged a strong kinship between Dyfed and Annwn and cemented their status as formidable rulers.

Pwyll also marries Rhiannon, a noblewoman famed for her beauty. He wins her hand through a clever ruse at a feast, and the couple’s marriage produces a son named Pryderi, who becomes a central figure in the later branches of the Mabinogi. The fortunes of Pwyll and Rhiannon, and Pryderi’s life, are continued in subsequent episodes of the cycle.

In scholarship, Pwyll’s story is viewed as foundational to the Mabinogion cycle, illustrating themes of kinship, the exchange of identities and kingdoms, and rulership. The First Branch blends romance, warfare, and political alliance, and Pwyll’s figure has influenced later Welsh literature and medieval studies.
