Punktuaation refers to the system of signs used in writing to separate phrases, indicate boundaries, and guide the reader through the structure and rhythm of text. Its main function is to clarify meaning, show pauses and intonation, and organize sentences and larger units such as lists and quotations.

The most common marks include the period, question mark, and exclamation point to end sentences; the comma to separate items or clauses; the semicolon to link related independent clauses; and the colon to introduce explanations, lists, or elaborations. The dash and the hyphen serve different roles, with the dash signaling a break or emphasis and the hyphen joining words. Parentheses and brackets set off supplementary material, while quotation marks indicate spoken text or cited passages. The apostrophe marks possession or contractions, and the ellipsis signals omitted material or a trailing pause.

Languages differ in punctuation conventions. Some use different opening and closing quotation marks, others prefer spacing and capitalization rules that affect how punctuation sits with text. Typographic punctuation emphasizes distinct opening and closing forms and may employ en-dashes or em-dashes for different purposes. In many languages, non-breaking spaces and specific punctuation neighborhoods are part of standard typesetting.

In digital writing, punctuation must be encoded consistently (often in Unicode) and correctly transformed by text editors and fonts. Poor or inconsistent punctuation can hinder readability, alter meaning, or affect searchability. Style guides such as those used in academic and professional writing outline variant rules for punctuation, including where to place marks relative to quotation and capitalization, and how to handle lists, abbreviations, and numbers.
