Pumppuve refers to a traditional Finnish method of transporting logs using a system of water channels and sluices, primarily employed during the logging season in spring. The term combines "pump" (a sluice gate) and "uve" (a water channel or ditch). This technique was widely used in Finland’s dense forests to facilitate the movement of timber from inland areas to rivers and eventually to sawmills or export ports.

The process begins by constructing a network of artificial waterways, often called *pumpkanavat*, which direct water flow to control the movement of logs. Sluice gates, or *pumput*, are strategically placed along these channels to regulate water levels and speed. When released, the controlled flow of water carries logs downstream, allowing loggers to transport large quantities efficiently without the need for heavy machinery. This method was particularly valuable in regions with abundant water resources but limited road infrastructure.

Pumppuve was most prevalent in southern and central Finland, where logging was a major industry from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. The technique declined with the advent of mechanized logging and improved transportation networks, though some remnants of these systems can still be found in preserved logging heritage sites. Today, pumppuve is studied as an example of sustainable forestry practices and historical engineering, reflecting Finland’s long-standing relationship with its forests.
