Pulssisuhde, often translated as pulse ratio or pulse duration, refers to the proportion of time a signal is at its active or high state compared to the total duration of a single cycle. In simpler terms, it describes how long a pulse lasts within a repeating pattern. This concept is fundamental in various fields, including electronics, engineering, and signal processing.

For a periodic signal, the pulse ratio is calculated by dividing the duration of the pulse (the time it is "on") by the total period of the signal (the time it takes for one complete cycle, including the "on" and "off" times). A pulse ratio of 0.5, for example, means the signal is active for exactly half of the time and inactive for the other half. Conversely, a pulse ratio close to 1 indicates a very long pulse duration relative to the off time, while a ratio close to 0 suggests a very short pulse.

The term is particularly relevant when discussing square waves or digital signals, where the pulses represent binary states, such as 1s and 0s. The precise control of the pulse ratio is critical for accurate data transmission, motor control, and the functioning of timing circuits.
