ptoluene

ptoluene, also known as para-xylene, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C8H10. It is one of three isomers of xylene, the other two being ortho-xylene and meta-xylene. ptoluene is a colorless liquid with a sweet, aromatic odor. It is flammable and miscible with most organic solvents. Its structure consists of a benzene ring with two methyl groups attached at opposite positions (para position).

The primary industrial application of ptoluene is as a precursor for the production of terephthalic acid (TPA) and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). These compounds are essential monomers for the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a widely used plastic for bottles, fibers, and films. The oxidation of ptoluene is the main route to TPA and DMT.

ptoluene is obtained from petroleum refining processes, typically from the catalytic reforming of naphtha. It can also be produced through the disproportionation of toluene. Due to its significant role in PET production, ptoluene is a globally important commodity chemical. Its handling and storage require precautions due to its flammability.
