Psykoosilääkkeet, also known as antipsychotics, are a class of medications primarily used to manage psychosis, a mental state characterized by a distorted perception of reality. This often includes hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. While their primary indication is for conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, they can also be used to treat agitation, aggression, and other severe behavioral symptoms in various mental health conditions.

These medications work by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine is believed to play a significant role in psychotic symptoms, and antipsychotics help to regulate its activity. Different antipsychotics have varying mechanisms of action and may affect other neurotransmitters as well, contributing to their diverse therapeutic effects and side effect profiles.

There are two main generations of antipsychotics: typical (first-generation) and atypical (second-generation). Typical antipsychotics, developed earlier, tend to be more effective at treating positive symptoms of psychosis but can cause more motor-related side effects. Atypical antipsychotics, developed later, are often considered to have a broader spectrum of action, addressing both positive and negative symptoms (such as lack of motivation or social withdrawal), and generally have a lower risk of motor side effects, though they may carry other metabolic risks.

Psykoosilääkkeet are typically taken orally, but some are available in injectable forms for long-acting administration. Treatment with antipsychotics is usually long-term and requires ongoing monitoring by a healthcare professional to assess effectiveness, manage side effects, and adjust dosage as needed. While they can significantly improve quality of life for individuals experiencing psychosis, they do not cure the underlying conditions.
