Pseudoskasvaim, also known as pseudotumors, are localized swellings that mimic tumors but are not neoplastic in origin. They can arise from various causes, including inflammation, trauma, infection, or bleeding into tissues. Unlike true tumors, which involve uncontrolled cell growth, pseudoskasvaim are typically reactive or reparative processes.

Inflammatory pseudoskasvaim are common and can occur in many organs, such as the lung, liver, or orbit. They are characterized by an accumulation of inflammatory cells, fibrous tissue, and sometimes reactive mesenchymal cells. The exact trigger can be difficult to identify, but chronic inflammation is often implicated. Symptoms vary depending on the location and size of the pseudoskasvaim, and can include pain, swelling, and functional impairment of the affected organ. Diagnosis often requires imaging studies followed by biopsy and histological examination to differentiate from malignant neoplasms. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve addressing the inflammation, surgical removal, or other specific therapies.

Hemorrhagic pseudoskasvaim, also called hematomas, are collections of blood that can form in soft tissues or organs following trauma or surgery. These can sometimes be mistaken for tumors on imaging due to their mass effect and appearance. Organizing hematomas can develop fibrous capsules, further enhancing their tumor-like presentation. Radiologically, they may appear as well-defined masses with varying signal intensities on MRI, depending on the age of the hemorrhage. Ultrasound can also be useful in identifying their cystic or complex nature. Treatment is often conservative, with spontaneous resolution expected as the body resorbs the blood. However, large or symptomatic hematomas may require surgical drainage.
