The journey of protein synthesis starts in the nucleus, where a gene's DNA sequence is transcribed into a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule. This mRNA then travels out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm, specifically to structures called ribosomes. Ribosomes act as the molecular machinery for protein synthesis. Here, the mRNA sequence is read in codons, which are three-nucleotide units. Transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules, each carrying a specific amino acid, recognize these codons and bring the corresponding amino acids to the ribosome.

As the ribosome moves along the mRNA, it catalyzes the formation of peptide bonds between the sequentially delivered amino acids, thereby creating a polypeptide chain. This chain then folds into a specific three-dimensional structure, which determines the protein's function. The entire process is tightly regulated, ensuring that the correct proteins are synthesized in the right amounts at the right times to maintain cellular and organismal health. Errors in protein synthesis can lead to a variety of diseases.
