Präskriptiv describes approaches to language that prescribe how language should be used, rather than describing how it is used. A prescriptive or normative grammar, style guide, or orthography sets explicit rules and judgments of correctness, often deeming some forms as standard and others as improper. These norms appear in school grammar, editorial practices, official language policies, and dictionaries or guides that aim to promote consistency and mutual intelligibility.

In contrast, descriptive grammar seeks to document actual language usage across dialects and registers without valuing one form over another. Descriptive work records patterns, variations, and how speakers and writers use language in real communication, even if those forms diverge from prescriptive rules.

The term derives from Latin praescribere, “to prescribe.” In German, präskriptive grammar and orthography are associated with the standard language promoted by authorities such as reference works and reform initiatives. Prescriptive norms have historically influenced education, publishing, and language policy, including orthographic reforms and style conventions.

Criticism of prescriptivism centers on its tendency to resist linguistic change and to marginalize nonstandard varieties. Modern linguistics typically embraces descriptivism as a core method while recognizing that prescriptive guidance can support clarity and consistency in learning and professional writing. In practice, many contexts balance both perspectives: prescriptive rules for formal communication and descriptive awareness for descriptive study and linguistic diversity.
