Protoplasten are cells from which the cell wall has been completely or partially removed. This process can occur naturally, such as during the formation of gametes, or it can be induced artificially through enzymatic treatment. Enzymes like cellulase and pectinase are commonly used to break down the complex carbohydrates that make up plant cell walls. Animal cells, lacking a cell wall, are essentially protoplasts.
The primary application of protoplast research lies in genetic engineering and plant breeding. By removing the
