protongenres
Protogenres are a concept used in media studies and literary theory to describe early or foundational forms of a genre. These are not fully developed genres as we understand them today, but rather the primitive stages from which more complex and recognizable genres emerged. Think of a protogenre as the ancestor or building blocks of a later, more established genre. For example, early myths and legends featuring heroes undertaking dangerous quests could be considered a protogenre of the modern fantasy or adventure genre. The elements are present – a protagonist, a challenge, a journey – but they are not yet codified into the specific tropes and structures we associate with contemporary fantasy novels or films.
The study of protogenres helps scholars understand the evolution of storytelling and how narrative conventions develop
