Protonbearing is an adjective used in science to describe systems, particles, or species that include or carry protons in their structure or charge state. The term emphasizes the presence or transport of protons as part of the entity, rather than neutrality or solely electrons.

In chemistry, proton-bearing species arise when a molecule is protonated, meaning a proton is added to it. This often results in a positively charged conjugate species. For example, many amines become proton-bearing ammonium ions upon protonation, and in aqueous solutions hydronium ions (H3O+) are naturally proton-bearing. Proton-bearing status is central to acid–base chemistry and to understanding reaction pathways that involve proton transfer.

In materials science and electrochemistry, proton-bearing materials are those capable of conducting protons. In physics, protons themselves are proton-bearing baryons, and in ionized plasmas or beams, ions that carry one or more protons are described as proton-bearing.

The term is not widely standardized in formal literature; more precise terms such as protonated, proton-conjugate, or proton-carrying are often preferred.
