Implementation typically relies on an abstraction layer that provides a uniform internal representation of messages or data. A well-defined interface and clear data models are central to maintaining protocol-agnostic behavior.

Common use cases include integration platforms and enterprise service buses that connect HTTP, JMS, AMQP, MQTT, and other protocols; API gateways that expose a unified API while routing to backends over different protocols; and IoT gateways that translate between protocols like MQTT, CoAP, and HTTP. Observability and security tools may also adopt protocol-agnostic approaches to analyze traffic without relying on any single protocol.
