Proporcionalitás, often translated as proportionality, is a fundamental principle found in various fields including law, ethics, and mathematics. In its broadest sense, it refers to the idea that something should be in due and appropriate relation to something else. It suggests a balance or a fitting correspondence between different elements.

In legal contexts, proportionality is a crucial doctrine. It dictates that a state's action, particularly the imposition of burdens or restrictions, must be proportionate to the legitimate aim it seeks to achieve. For example, a punishment for a crime should not be excessively harsh compared to the severity of the offense. Similarly, restrictions on fundamental rights must be no more than is necessary to achieve a compelling public interest.
