Proplastides are immature, undifferentiated plastids found in the meristematic tissues of plant cells and in the embryonic cells of algae. They are the precursors from which all other types of plastids, such as chloroplasts, chromoplasts, amyloplasts, and leucoplasts, develop. Proplastides are typically small, generally spherical or oval in shape, and possess a simple internal structure. They contain a rudimentary thylakoid system and often a small amount of stroma. Their primary function is to divide and proliferate, providing a supply of these precursor organelles to growing tissues.

The development and differentiation of proplastides into specialized plastids are triggered by environmental cues and the developmental stage of the plant. For instance, exposure to light induces proplastides to develop into chloroplasts, initiating the synthesis of chlorophyll and the formation of a complex grana structure. In the absence of light or in specific tissues, proplastides can differentiate into other types of plastids. For example, in root cells, they often develop into amyloplasts, which store starch. Proplastides are essential for plant growth and development, serving as the foundational plastid type that can adapt to various cellular needs and environmental conditions through controlled differentiation.
