It is a facet of atomicity within the broader ACID framework, ensuring that a set of changes to an entity remains consistent even in the presence of concurrent access or failures. The term is often used to discuss how systems manage updates to multiple attributes or fields atomically.

In relational databases, atomicity is achieved through transactions. When an operation touches several properties (fields) of a row or across multiple rows, the database ensures that either all changes are committed or none are, preserving a valid state. In document databases or key-value stores, atomicity may apply at the level of a single document or item, with multi-document updates requiring explicit transactional support.

Mechanisms to enforce propertiesatomicity include write-ahead logging, rollback capabilities, and commit protocols. In distributed systems, achieving atomicity across nodes often relies on two-phase commit, consensus algorithms, or multi-version concurrency control. These techniques balance correctness with performance and availability, and may introduce latency or complexity.

Practical applications include maintaining consistency during user profile updates, inventory adjustments, or configuration changes that involve multiple properties. If a failure occurs mid-update, systems roll back to the previous state, preventing partial updates that could leave data in an inconsistent or invalid condition.
