Prokariótákat is the Finnish term for prokaryotes. Prokaryotes are a major group of organisms characterized by their cellular structure. Unlike eukaryotic cells, prokaryotic cells lack a true nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Their genetic material, typically a single circular chromosome, is located in a region of the cytoplasm called the nucleoid.

The two primary domains of prokaryotes are Bacteria and Archaea. Bacteria are found in almost every environment on Earth, playing vital roles in ecosystems, human health, and industry. Archaea, once thought to inhabit only extreme environments, are now known to be widespread and diverse, often found in less extreme habitats as well.

Prokaryotes are generally unicellular, although some can form colonies or filaments. They reproduce asexually, primarily through binary fission, a process where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells. Prokaryotes exhibit a wide range of metabolic diversity, utilizing various sources of energy and carbon for their survival. This includes photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, and heterotrophy. Their small size and rapid reproduction rates allow them to adapt quickly to changing environmental conditions. Despite their simple cellular organization, prokaryotes are incredibly successful and have a profound impact on the planet's biosphere.
