prionproteinFragments
Prion protein fragments are pieces of the prion protein (PrP). The normal cellular form of the prion protein, PrPC, is a glycoprotein found on the surface of cells, particularly neurons. Prions are infectious agents composed solely of protein, which can cause fatal neurodegenerative diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). These diseases include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans, scrapie in sheep, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle.
The key to prion infectivity lies in the misfolding of PrPC into an abnormal, infectious isoform called
Prion protein fragments can arise during the normal processing of PrPC or through pathological events associated
