Primäärivärijoukko refers to a set of colors from which all other colors can be mixed. The specific colors in a primäärivärijoukko depend on the color model being used. In subtractive color models, such as those used in printing and pigment mixing, the traditional primäärivärijoukko is red, yellow, and blue (RYB). Mixing these primary colors in various proportions can produce a wide range of secondary and tertiary colors. For example, red and yellow mix to form orange, yellow and blue mix to form green, and blue and red mix to form purple.

In modern printing, a more accurate primäärivärijoukko for subtractive color is cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY). This set allows for a broader and more precise color gamut. Often, black (K) is added to form the CMYK color model, which is essential for achieving deep blacks and reducing the amount of ink used.

In additive color models, like those used for light emitted from screens (monitors, TVs, smartphones), the primäärivärijoukko is red, green, and blue (RGB). When these primary colors of light are combined, they create secondary colors: red and green light mix to form yellow, green and blue light mix to form cyan, and blue and red light mix to form magenta.
