Prejaculatory fluid, often referred to as pre-cum, is a clear, viscous liquid that is expelled from the penis during sexual arousal. This fluid is produced by the bulbourethral glands, also known as Cowper's glands, which are located beneath the prostate gland. The primary function of prejaculatory fluid is to lubricate the urethra, making it easier for semen to pass through during ejaculation. It also serves to neutralize any residual acidity in the urethra left by urine, creating a more hospitable environment for sperm.

The amount of prejaculatory fluid produced can vary significantly between individuals and even from one sexual encounter to another. It is not a reliable indicator of fertility or sexual health. While prejaculatory fluid itself does not contain sperm, it can sometimes carry residual sperm from a previous ejaculation if the penis has not been thoroughly cleaned. Therefore, it is possible, though less likely than with full ejaculation, for pregnancy to occur through unprotected sexual intercourse when prejaculatory fluid is present. For this reason, withdrawal before ejaculation is not considered a foolproof method of contraception.
