Predikatiivside, also known as predicative relations, are a specific type of grammatical relation used to express the state, identity, or property of a subject. Unlike a verb that denotes an action, a predicative element functions as a complement that characterizes or identifies the subject. In many European languages, these relations are expressed through adjectives, nouns, or infinitive phrases and are marked by specific morphological features.

In Estonian, predikatiivside occur frequently in copular constructions. A typical example is the sentence “Ta on õpetaja” where the predicate “õpetaja” (teacher) identifies the subject “ta” (he/she). The predicate part is usually in the nominative case, matching the subject in gender and number when appropriate, though it can also appear in the partitive or genitive in certain contexts. Predicatives can also be verbs in infinitive form such as in “Ta peab õppima” (He has to study), where “õppima” indicates a necessary action as part of the subject’s state.

These relations are distinguished from thematic roles like objekt (object) or adverbial complements because they represent a characteristic inherent to the subject rather than an external action or state. Linguists use the term "predicativ" to discuss how languages mark these relationships syntactically and morphologically. In many Indo‑European languages, such predicatives are regulated by copular verbs (e.g., „to be“ in English), and their grammatical marking varies across languages.

Predikatiivside also play a role in discourse, allowing speakers to describe identities quickly and establish background information.
