Common motivations for preclassification include reducing computational cost by filtering items that require only lightweight processing, directing data to specialized models that are optimized for particular categories, and providing metadata or context that helps downstream classifiers perform better. Techniques used for preclassification include gating networks that decide whether an item should proceed to a detailed classifier, rule-based heuristics that assign broad labels, and unsupervised clustering that forms coarse classes prior to refinement.

In practice, preclassification is used in various domains. In natural language processing, documents might be preclassified by language or general topic; in computer vision, images may be categorized by rough scene type before fine-grained object recognition. In information retrieval or email filtering, an initial preclassification step can separate items into broad groups that determine subsequent processing paths.
