The next stage is nucleation, where water vapor transforms into liquid water droplets (condensation) or directly into ice crystals (deposition) on these nuclei. This process occurs when the air becomes supersaturated with respect to water or ice. Following nucleation, cloud droplets or ice crystals grow through various microphysical processes. These include vapor deposition, where more water vapor condenses or deposits onto existing particles, and collision-coalescence, where smaller droplets collide and merge to form larger ones. Ice crystals grow primarily through accretion, where supercooled water droplets freeze onto them, and through the Bergeron process, which involves the transfer of water vapor from supercooled liquid droplets to ice crystals in mixed-phase clouds.

As these particles grow sufficiently large and heavy, they overcome updraft forces within the cloud and begin to fall. This falling stage is what we observe as precipitation, which can take various forms such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail, depending on the atmospheric temperature profile. The characteristics of the precipitatiefasen, including particle size, shape, and rate of fall, are influenced by factors like cloud composition, temperature, humidity, and atmospheric dynamics.
