Potenciálgátat, often translated as potential barrier or potential energy barrier, is a fundamental concept in physics describing a region of space where the potential energy of a particle is higher than in the surrounding areas. Imagine a small hill; to get over the hill, an object needs a certain amount of energy, its kinetic energy, to overcome the potential energy of its position at the top of the hill. If the object doesn't have enough energy, it will be reflected or stopped by the barrier.

In classical physics, a particle must possess energy equal to or greater than the height of the potential barrier to surmount it. If its energy is less than the barrier height, it cannot pass through. This is analogous to rolling a ball up a hill; if you don't push it hard enough, it will roll back down.

However, in quantum mechanics, the behavior of particles at potential barriers is significantly different due to the wave-like nature of matter. Quantum particles, such as electrons, can exhibit a phenomenon called quantum tunneling. Even if a particle's energy is less than the height of the potential barrier, there is a non-zero probability that it can pass through the barrier. This probability depends on the height and width of the barrier, as well as the energy of the particle. This counter-intuitive effect has crucial implications in various fields, including nuclear fusion, semiconductor devices, and scanning tunneling microscopy.
