Postcombustionkeräys, also known as post-combustion capture, is a method of separating carbon dioxide (CO2) from the flue gases of fossil fuel power plants or industrial facilities. This technology is a form of carbon capture and storage (CCS). The process involves capturing CO2 after the fuel has been combusted and the resulting flue gases have been produced.

The most common method for post-combustionkeräys uses chemical solvents, often amines, to absorb the CO2 from the flue gas. The flue gas is passed through an absorber column where it comes into contact with the solvent. The CO2 in the flue gas reacts with the solvent and is absorbed. The solvent, now rich in CO2, is then heated in a separate stripper column. This heating process releases the captured CO2, which can then be compressed and transported for storage or utilization. The lean solvent, having released the CO2, is then recycled back to the absorber.

Other capture technologies for post-combustionkeräys exist, including adsorption using solid materials, membrane separation, and cryogenic separation. Each of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of efficiency, cost, and energy requirements.

The primary goal of post-combustionkeräys is to reduce the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere, thereby mitigating climate change. The captured CO2 can be transported via pipelines or ships to geological formations for permanent storage, such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs or deep saline aquifers. Alternatively, it can be used in various industrial processes, a concept known as carbon capture and utilization (CCU). Post-combustionkeräys is considered a key technology for decarbonizing existing fossil fuel infrastructure.
