POSCO, short for Pohang Iron and Steel Company, is a South Korean multinational steelmaker based in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province. Founded in 1968 by the government as part of Korea's heavy industry drive, POSCO produced its first steel in 1970 and began rapid expansion domestically and internationally. It grew to become one of the world's largest steel producers by crude steel output and diversified into materials solutions, engineering, and trading.

POSCO's business is structured around steel production and related services. The core steel operations produce hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel, plates, sections, wire rod, stainless steel, and other alloy products, with major integrated mills in Pohang and Gwangyang and additional plants abroad. Non-steel operations include POSCO E&C, the construction arm; and POSCO International, the trading and global project development arm, which grew out of the former POSCO Daewoo.

In the 2010s and beyond, POSCO pushed for global expansion through joint ventures, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships, and pursued downstream value-added products and green initiatives. The group has invested in battery materials, hydrogen, and low-emission steel technologies as part of plans to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

POSCO is publicly traded on the Korea Exchange and operates as a multinational conglomerate with activities spanning production, trading, engineering, and material solutions. It remains a key player in the global steel industry, with a focus on scale, efficiency, and sustainability in its operations.
