Porttiinjektion, often translated as "port injection," is a fuel delivery system used in internal combustion engines. It functions by injecting fuel directly into the intake port of each cylinder, just before the intake valve. This contrasts with traditional throttle body injection, where fuel is introduced into the throttle body, or direct injection, where fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber.

In a port injection system, a fuel injector is positioned in the intake manifold or intake port for each cylinder. These injectors are electronically controlled and timed to spray a precise amount of fuel into the intake port during the intake stroke. As the intake valve opens, the fuel mixes with the incoming air, forming a combustible mixture that is then drawn into the cylinder. The spark plug then ignites this mixture, generating power.

Port injection offers advantages such as improved fuel atomization and distribution compared to older carburetor systems. It also allows for more precise fuel control, leading to better fuel economy and reduced emissions. The mixture of air and fuel forms outside the cylinder, which can help prevent issues like engine knock under certain conditions. However, it is generally less efficient than direct injection systems, which inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber, allowing for even finer control and potentially higher compression ratios. Port injection remains a common and effective fuel delivery method in many gasoline engines.
