A porometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the pore size distribution and pore volume of a porous material. These devices are essential in various fields, including materials science, geology, and engineering, for characterizing substances like ceramics, filters, soils, and membranes. Different types of porometers exist, each employing distinct principles to achieve pore size measurements.

One common type is the mercury intrusion porometer. This method relies on the principle that non-wetting liquids, such as mercury, will only penetrate pores under pressure. The applied pressure is inversely proportional to the pore size; higher pressures are required to force mercury into smaller pores. By incrementally increasing the pressure and measuring the volume of mercury intruding into the sample, a detailed pore size distribution can be generated.

Another technique is gas adsorption porosimetry. This method involves exposing a porous material to a gas, typically nitrogen, at low temperatures. The gas molecules adsorb onto the surface of the pores. By analyzing the adsorption and desorption isotherms (plots of gas uptake versus relative pressure), information about pore size, volume, and surface area can be obtained. This method is particularly useful for characterizing materials with very small pores, such as micropores and mesopores.

Bubble point porometry is a simpler method often used for larger pore sizes. It involves applying increasing gas pressure to a wetted sample until the first gas bubble emerges from the largest pore. This pressure corresponds to the pore throat size. Multiple bubble point measurements with different wetting liquids can provide more comprehensive pore size information. The data obtained from porometry is crucial for understanding and controlling properties like permeability, filtration efficiency, and mechanical strength.
