Core samples provide detailed lithology, grain size, mineralogy, and structure; cuttings offer rapid lithological change detection with lower continuity. Downhole logs measure properties such as resistivity, gamma, density, porosity, and sonic velocity. Laboratory tests on cores and cuttings cover mineralogy, porosity, permeability, and chemistry. Hydrological tests yield hydraulic conductivity and aquifer properties.

Data collection is supplemented by geological and geotechnical interpretations, including cross-sections and 3D models. Drilling plans, sampling protocols, and quality control procedures are followed, with data integrated into geological models used for resource estimation, reservoir characterization, or design calculations.

Applications include mineral exploration, oil and gas exploration, groundwater assessment, and geotechnical investigations for construction projects. Reporting typically comprises borehole location and depth, lithology descriptions, alteration and structure notes, sample intervals, log plots, and test results.

Limitations and quality considerations include incomplete core recovery, hole deviation, sample disturbance, and measurement uncertainties. Proper QA/QC, calibration, and documentation are essential to ensure data reliability and comparability across boreholes.
