Populatiota refers to populations in a broad sense. In ecology, a population is the group of individuals of a single species living in a defined area, studied for size, density, distribution, genetic variation, and demographic processes. In human demography, population denotes the number of people in a territory and their characteristics such as age, sex, and socioeconomic status.

Key indicators include size, density (persons per unit area), growth rate, age structure, life expectancy, fertility rate, mortality rate, and net migration. Distribution can be uneven, producing urbanization and regional disparities.

Population dynamics arise from births and deaths and are modulated by migration. Simple models describe growth as exponential or logistic with carrying capacity. The demographic transition describes shifts from high to low mortality and fertility and thereby changing population growth.

Data and projections rely on censuses, vital statistics, and surveys, complemented by administrative records. Analyses support planning for housing, education, health care, infrastructure, and environmental management, and inform policy on migration, family planning, and aging societies.
