Polüstüreeenvaht, commonly known as expanded polystyrene (EPS), is a rigid cellular plastic material produced from polystyrene beads. These beads are expanded by heat and steam, fusing together to form blocks or sheets of lightweight foam. The resulting material is approximately 98% air, which contributes to its excellent thermal insulation properties.

EPS is widely used as a building material for insulation in walls, roofs, and floors due to its low thermal conductivity. It is also utilized in packaging for consumer goods, electronics, and fragile items to provide cushioning and protection during transport. Its lightweight nature makes it easy to handle and install.

The production of EPS involves a process of pre-expansion, maturing, and molding. The pre-expansion step heats the polystyrene beads to soften them and introduce air, causing them to expand significantly. The maturing process allows the expanded beads to stabilize. Finally, molding shapes the beads into desired forms, such as blocks or specific profiles, by applying heat and pressure.

While EPS is a valuable material, its environmental impact is a subject of discussion. It is not readily biodegradable, and its disposal can be a concern. However, EPS is recyclable, and efforts are underway to increase collection and reprocessing rates. Recycled EPS can be used to create new insulation products, packaging, or other plastic items. Its durability and effectiveness in reducing energy consumption during its use phase are often cited as mitigating factors in its overall environmental footprint.
