This process does not require an initiation step and proceeds through the formation of dimers, trimers, and so on, until high molecular weight polymers are formed. Common examples of step-growth polymerization include condensation polymerization, where a small molecule like water is eliminated, and addition polymerization without chain carriers, such as in the formation of polyurethanes. The choice of polymerization mechanism directly influences reaction kinetics, molecular weight distribution, and the overall architecture of the polymer.
