Polyacrylic acid, often abbreviated as PAA, is a synthetic polymer belonging to the group of polycarboxylates. It is formed through the polymerization of acrylic acid monomers. In its common form, it is a solid, white, and odorless powder. PAA is known for its excellent water solubility and its ability to form gels. Its chemical structure consists of a backbone of carbon atoms with carboxyl groups (-COOH) attached to every other carbon. These carboxyl groups are responsible for its acidic properties and its ability to interact with water and other charged species.

The properties of polyacrylic acid can be modified by adjusting its molecular weight and the degree of neutralization of its carboxyl groups. Partially or fully neutralized PAA exists as polyacrylate salts, which are even more water-soluble. PAA finds a wide range of applications due to its thickening, dispersing, binding, and chelating capabilities. It is commonly used as a superabsorbent material in disposable diapers and feminine hygiene products, where it can absorb and retain large amounts of liquid. In agriculture, it acts as a soil conditioner, improving water retention and soil structure. PAA is also employed as a dispersant in detergents, paints, and ceramics, preventing particles from clumping together. Furthermore, it serves as a binder in various industrial processes and as a thickener in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
