Applications of polyurethane-based bases span protective coatings for metal and wood, high-performance adhesives, structural insulation foams for buildings, automotive components, and industrial elastomers. Their properties are highly adaptable, enabling a range of hardness, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance, depending on formulation.

Environmental and safety considerations include the handling of di- and polyisocyanates, which can be sensitizers; appropriate ventilation, personal protective equipment, and exposure monitoring are advised. Many polyurethane-based systems aim to reduce volatile organic compound emissions through waterborne or 100% solids formulations, though recycling and end-of-life treatment remain challenging. The term itself is regionally variable and commonly used to describe polyurethane-based bases rather than a single chemical compound.
