Polyisocyanates are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of multiple isocyanate functional groups (–N=C=O) within their molecular structure. The most common polyisocyanates include toluene diisocyanate (TDI), methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). TDI and MDI are aromatic polyisocyanates, meaning they contain benzene rings in their structure, while HDI is an aliphatic polyisocyanate, lacking aromatic components. The choice of polyisocyanate often depends on the desired properties of the final polyurethane product, such as flexibility, hardness, or resistance to UV degradation.

Polyisocyanates react with polyols (compounds containing multiple hydroxyl groups) in a polymerization process known as the urethane reaction, forming polyurethane. This reaction involves the nucleophilic addition of the hydroxyl group to the isocyanate, resulting in the formation of a urethane linkage (–NH–CO–O–) and the release of carbon dioxide. The resulting polyurethane can be molded into various forms, including foams, elastomers, coatings, and adhesives.

While polyisocyanates are highly valuable in industry, they pose significant health and safety risks due to their reactivity and potential to cause respiratory irritation, skin sensitization, and allergic reactions. Proper handling, ventilation, and personal protective equipment (PPE) are essential when working with these compounds. Additionally, environmental regulations govern their use to minimize emissions and waste, as some polyisocyanates can contribute to air pollution or require specialized disposal methods.

Research continues to explore alternative, less hazardous polyisocyanate substitutes or safer synthesis methods to improve worker safety and reduce environmental impact. Advances in green chemistry aim to develop bio-based or low-toxicity alternatives without compromising the performance of polyurethane products.
