Polisztiroldarabkák, commonly known as polystyrene fragments or EPS beads, are small, lightweight pieces derived from expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. EPS is a rigid, closed-cell foam plastic that is approximately 98% air, making it an excellent insulating material. The manufacturing process involves expanding small polystyrene beads with a blowing agent, which are then molded into various shapes or used as loose fill. Polisztiroldarabkák are typically white and have a characteristic crunchy texture.

These fragments find widespread use in a variety of applications. They are frequently employed as loose-fill insulation in attics, walls, and floors due to their excellent thermal resistance and ease of installation. They can also be incorporated into concrete mixes to create lightweight, insulating concrete known as expanded polystyrene concrete. In packaging, polisztiroldarabkák serve as protective void fill, cushioning fragile items during transit. They are also a component in bean bags and other soft furnishings, providing bulk and shape.

Environmentally, polisztiroldarabkák pose challenges. Like all polystyrene, they are not readily biodegradable and can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Their lightweight nature makes them susceptible to wind dispersal, contributing to litter. While recycling of EPS is possible, the collection and processing of loose fragments can be more complex than for molded EPS products. Efforts are ongoing to improve recycling rates and explore alternative, more sustainable materials for similar applications.
