Polarization holding refers to the ability of an optical fiber to maintain the polarization state of light propagating through it. Standard optical fibers, due to imperfections and internal stresses, tend to randomly alter the polarization of light over distance, causing a phenomenon known as polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Polarization-holding fibers (PHFs), also known as polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs), are specifically designed to mitigate this effect.

There are two primary mechanisms for achieving polarization holding in fibers. One common method involves creating asymmetrical stress in the fiber's core during manufacturing. This stress leads to a difference in the refractive indices experienced by light polarized along different axes, causing one polarization state to travel faster than the other. By launching light along one of these principal axes, its polarization state is preserved. Another approach utilizes a non-circular fiber core, which also introduces birefringence and a similar polarization-preserving characteristic.

The applications of polarization-holding fibers are critical in fields where maintaining the polarization of light is essential. These include optical sensing, interferometry, fiber optic gyroscopes, coherent communication systems, and high-speed optical switching. Without PHFs, the performance of these technologies would be significantly degraded by unpredictable changes in polarization.
