Polariseerumist refers to the process by which light waves become oriented in a specific direction. Light is an electromagnetic wave that oscillates in all directions perpendicular to its direction of travel. Unpolarized light, such as that from the sun or a typical light bulb, exhibits these random oscillations.

Polarisation occurs when these oscillations are restricted to a single plane. This can happen through several mechanisms. One common method is selective absorption, where a polarizing filter allows light waves oscillating in one plane to pass through while absorbing those oscillating in other planes. Another method is reflection. When light reflects off a non-metallic surface, like water or glass, at a specific angle (Brewster's angle), the reflected light becomes partially or fully polarized in the plane parallel to the reflecting surface. Scattering of light, as seen with sunlight in the atmosphere, also leads to polarization.

Polarized light has various practical applications. Polarized sunglasses reduce glare by filtering out horizontally polarized light reflected from surfaces. Polarizing filters are used in photography to enhance contrast and reduce reflections, and in LCD screens to control light transmission. The study of polarization is fundamental in optics and has applications in fields ranging from materials science to astronomy.
