Polarimetrites are a class of minerals that exhibit pleochroism, meaning they display different colors when viewed from different angles. This phenomenon is a result of the way light interacts with the internal structure of the crystal. Specifically, the arrangement of atoms within the mineral causes light waves vibrating in different directions to be absorbed to varying degrees.

The term "polarimetrite" is not a formal mineralogical classification but rather a descriptive term used to highlight this optical property. Many well-known minerals are polarimetrites, including cordierite, dichroite, and iolite, which are often used interchangeably to describe a gem-quality variety of cordierite. These gemstones are prized for their striking color changes, which can shift from blue to violet, gray, or even yellow depending on the lighting and viewing angle.

The pleochroism observed in polarimetrites is directly related to their crystal structure and the chemical composition of the mineral. Different elements and their arrangements within the lattice absorb specific wavelengths of light. When polarized light, which vibrates in a single plane, passes through the mineral, the amount of light absorbed varies according to the orientation of the polarization relative to the crystal axes. This differential absorption is what creates the perceived color change. Gemologists and mineralogists utilize this property not only for aesthetic appreciation but also for identification purposes.
