Podziałe, or more commonly podział in Polish, is a noun referring to the act or result of dividing something into parts, portions, or categories. The form podziale is the locative singular, used in phrases such as “w podziale administracyjnym” or “w podziale przestrzeni.” The term derives from the verb podzielić (to divide) and the prefix po-, with roots in Proto-Slavic.

In general use, podział denotes a segmentation or distribution of a whole into components. It can describe physical separations (podział terenu into regions), organizational schemes (podział pracy between units), or categorizations (podział społeczeństwa into groups). The concept is central to planning, administration, statistics, and linguistics, where one speaks of podział na części, podział na kategorie, or podział zbioru.

In administrative and political geography, podział refers to the territorial division of a country into units such as provinces, counties, or municipalities (podział administracyjny kraju). In Poland, this includes the historical and contemporary subdivisions, such as voivodeships, powiats, and gminas, and constitutional reorganizations that refine the structure of territorial governance.

In biology, podział komórkowy is the process by which a cell divides into daughter cells, encompassing mitosis and meiosis. In mathematics and logic, the term is used for the partition of a set or for the distribution of elements into groups; for arithmetic division, the more common term is dzielenie, with terms like iloraz (quotient) and reszta (remainder).

Historical use includes the Rozbiory Polski, or partitions of Poland in the late 18th century, which are sometimes described as major “podział państwa.”
