Pneumoniat is a colloquial or misspelling of pneumonia, a common lung infection. Pneumonia inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus, causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

Symptoms of pneumonia can range from mild to life-threatening. Common symptoms include cough, which may produce phlegm, fever, sweating, and shaking chills, shortness of breath, sharp or stabbing chest pain that worsens when you breathe deeply or cough, and fatigue. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Pneumonia can affect anyone, but it is most serious for infants and young children, people older than 65, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic health problems. Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, chest X-ray, and possibly blood tests. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the pneumonia and may include antibiotics for bacterial pneumonia, antiviral medications for viral pneumonia, or antifungal medications for fungal pneumonia. Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage symptoms. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary for oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation. Prevention strategies include vaccinations, good hygiene, and avoiding smoking.
