A pluviometer, also known as a rain gauge, is an instrument used to measure the amount of liquid precipitation over a specific period. It is a vital tool in meteorology, hydrology, and agriculture for understanding weather patterns, managing water resources, and assessing crop conditions.

There are several types of pluviometers. The most common is the manual, non-recording type, which consists of a collecting cylinder, often with a funnel to reduce evaporation. The collected water is then measured manually using a calibrated measuring cylinder or scale. Recording pluviometers, on the other hand, automatically log precipitation amounts over time. These can include tipping-bucket gauges, where each tip of a small bucket represents a measured amount of rain, or weighing gauges, which record the total weight of collected precipitation. Automatic weather stations often incorporate these advanced types for continuous data collection.

The placement of a pluviometer is crucial for accurate measurements. It should be installed in an open area, away from buildings, trees, or other obstructions that could affect rainfall patterns. The height of the gauge is also standardized, typically at ground level or a few feet above it, to avoid wind effects that can lead to undercatch. Data from pluviometers are used to create rainfall maps, forecast weather, and study the impact of climate change on precipitation.
