A plumbline is a simple instrument used to determine a true vertical line. It consists of a length of cord or string with a weight attached to its end. The weight, or plumb bob, is typically made of lead or another dense metal, and the string is held at a fixed point above the surface to be tested.

To use it, the string is allowed to hang freely; once at rest, the string aligns with the gravitational vertical. The line of the string therefore marks a plumb line—the direction of gravity at that location. By aligning or transferring points along this line, builders can ensure that structures are perfectly vertical with respect to the Earth.

Plumblines have ancient origins and have been used in many cultures for millennia. The word plumb comes from the Latin plumbum meaning lead, and plummet is a related term. The technique appears in ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian records and was widely adopted in classical architecture and medieval building.

Common applications include checking the plumb of walls and door frames, transferring heights from floors to ceilings, aligning posts, pins, or columns, and determining the verticality of a reference line in surveying. The method is simple, inexpensive, and does not require batteries or electricity, though wind can affect the line if the string is long or left unattended.

Today, laser plumb lines and electronic sensors provide alternatives, but a traditional plumbline remains a basic tool in masonry, carpentry, and surveying for quick, reliable vertical references.
