Pleomorft is a term used in speculative biology and some science fiction to describe a hypothetical microorganism that exhibits pleomorphism—the ability to alter its shape, size, and cellular architecture in response to environmental conditions. The word blends Greek roots for many and form with a suffix -t, and it is used mainly as a conceptual device rather than an established species name.

Morphology and life cycle: In the envisioned scenarios, pleomorfts assume multiple forms, including spherical cyst-like stages, filamentous bodies, amoeboid cells, and flagellated variants. Transitions between forms are proposed to be driven by nutrient status, temperature, pH, and oxygen availability. Reproduction is described as flexible, with binary fission in some forms and budding or fragmentation in others.

Ecology and habitat: Speculative accounts place pleomorfts in soils, freshwater biofilms, and other microhabitats where resources fluctuate. Shape-changing is imagined as a strategy to optimize nutrient uptake, move through heterogeneous environments, or endure stress. Dormant or resistant stages may confer tolerance to desiccation, heat, or chemical challenge.

Metabolism and physiology: The organism is depicted as metabolically versatile, capable of aerobic respiration, anaerobic fermentation, and possibly chemolithotrophy, depending on form and conditions. Energy allocation would be linked to morphology, with some shapes specialized for substrate absorption and others for motility or division.

Taxonomic status and cultural role: Pleomorft is not recognized as a real taxon by current biology. It appears mainly in fiction, hypothetical modeling, or educational thought experiments to explore concepts of phenotypic plasticity.
