A platemaker is a person or a machine involved in the process of creating printing plates. In traditional printing methods, such as offset lithography, a printing plate is a thin sheet of metal or plastic that carries the image to be printed. The platemaker's role is to transfer this image onto the plate.

Historically, platemakers were skilled artisans who meticulously prepared the plates by hand.
