This endosymbiotic origin is supported by the fact that plastides have their own DNA, which is similar to bacterial DNA, and they reproduce independently of the host cell.

The development and differentiation of plastides from precursor organelles called proplastids are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Changes in plastide type can occur in response to developmental cues or environmental conditions, such as light exposure and nutrient availability. Understanding the diversity and function of plastides is crucial for comprehending plant biology, from photosynthesis and energy production to the development of plant coloration and defense mechanisms.
