Plasminogeenista, often referred to as plasminogen, is a crucial protein in the human body that plays a vital role in the fibrinolytic system. This system is responsible for breaking down blood clots, a process essential for maintaining healthy circulation and preventing the accumulation of unnecessary fibrin deposits. Plasminogen circulates in the blood in an inactive form.

The activation of plasminogen into its active form, plasmin, is a tightly regulated process. This conversion is primarily carried out by enzymes called plasminogen activators, the most prominent of which is tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA). Once activated, plasmin is a serine protease that specifically targets and degrades fibrin, the main component of blood clots. Conversely, inherited or acquired deficiencies in plasminogen or its activators can lead to bleeding disorders. Therapeutic interventions aimed at modulating plasminogen activation are used in treating certain thrombotic conditions, highlighting the clinical significance of this protein.
